Slovakia should stick to the EU goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

The 2021 European Climate Law commits the EU to reaching climate neutrality by 2050: emitting no more greenhouse gases than are absorbed. According to the European Parliament's Eurobarometer (February 2026), 52% of Slovaks are worried about disasters caused by climate change.

Sales of new petrol and diesel cars should be banned from 2035.

EU rules adopted in 2023 require new cars sold from 2035 to emit no CO2, which in practice means the end of sales of new petrol and diesel cars. In December 2025 the European Commission proposed softening the target to a 90% cut in emissions and giving carmakers more ways to meet it. EU governments and the European Parliament are still negotiating the proposal.
