What does Progresívne Slovensko propose?
Progresívne Slovensko (PS) is a liberal political movement founded in 2017. It belongs to the ALDE Party and, in the European Parliament, to the Renew Europe group. Michal Šimečka has led it since 2022 and was re-elected in March 2026. It came second in the 2023 election with 18.0% of the vote and 32 seats, and its group now has 33 MPs. It won the 2024 European elections in Slovakia with 27.8% and six seats.
PS is the largest opposition force facing Robert Fico's government. Polls in September and October 2026 put it at 17.3–19.5%, first or level with Smer. It proposes restoring the Special Prosecutor's Office, an economic plan (TRESK!) that cuts taxes on work and scraps the financial transactions tax, and doubling housebuilding to 30,000 homes a year. It supports military aid to Ukraine and Ukraine's EU membership, as well as civil partnerships for all couples. Its 2026 congress ruled out working with Smer, Hlas, the SNS or Republika after the election.
PS has a documented position on 42 of the 42 test questions, across 12 topics: 21 in favour, 1 in between and 20 against. Take the test to find out how well you match PS.

Banks, energy companies and large retail chains should pay a special tax.

Source: TASR (teraz.sk), 12. 8. 2023.
The deficit should be reduced by cutting state spending rather than by raising taxes.
Reasoning: Its TRESK plan bases consolidation partly on spending cuts (scrapping subsidies, trimming state running costs); on the revenue side it looks mainly to property taxes.

The standard VAT rate should be cut from 23%, even if the state collects less money.
Reasoning: Its TRESK plan does not propose cutting VAT: it prioritises lower taxes on labour and a shift from direct taxes to indirect and property taxes.
