In brief

How do Smer and Republika differ?

Smer and Republika part ways mainly on the EU, Ukraine's membership, foreign workers and the budget. Republika fully supports a referendum on whether to stay in the EU if it does not change fundamentally, and Smer fully opposes it. Smer supports letting Ukraine join the EU once it meets all the conditions and making it easier for foreign workers to fill labour shortages; Republika fully opposes both. Republika supports reducing the deficit by cutting state spending rather than raising taxes, and tighter abortion rules, which Smer rejects. They agree on much of the rest: both fully oppose re-establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor and resuming state military aid to Ukraine, and both support lifting EU sanctions on Russia, buying Russian gas and oil after 2027 and stricter state oversight of NGOs funded from abroad.

Differences

Where they clash most

European Union

If the EU does not change fundamentally, Slovakia should hold a referendum on whether to stay in it.

Smer Strongly against
Its 2023 manifesto calls Slovakia's EU membership "irreplaceable", and its 2024 EU manifesto calls it beneficial despite criticising the EU's leadership.
Republika Strongly in favour
Its programme proposes turning the EU back into a purely economic association and, if that reform fails, initiating a referendum on Slovakia leaving.

Ukraine and Russia

Ukraine should be able to join the EU once it meets all the conditions.

Smer In favour
Its 2024 EU manifesto backs Ukraine joining the EU only once it strictly meets the criteria, though it sees this as highly unlikely in the near term.
Republika Strongly against
In 2024 it said it fully opposed enlarging the EU to include Ukraine and called opening accession talks a profound mistake.

Migration

Slovakia should make it easier for foreign workers to come and work in sectors with labour shortages.

Smer In favour
In 2023 Fico called for cutting the time it takes legal migrants with skills Slovak firms need to obtain permits, while the party rejects illegal migration.
Republika Strongly against
In 2025 it flatly rejected the government's plan to bring in workers from Uzbekistan, and its programme says it wants no immigrants.
