In brief

How do SaS and KDH differ?

SaS and KDH part ways mainly on values. SaS fully supports allowing same-sex couples to register their partnership, and KDH fully opposes it. KDH supports tighter abortion rules and keeping possession of small amounts of cannabis a crime, and fully supports leaving ethical issues such as marriage and adoption to each country rather than the EU; SaS fully opposes all three. KDH supports a state majority stake in large energy companies, which SaS fully opposes. SaS also fully supports resuming state military aid to Ukraine, on which KDH is neutral. They agree on much else: both fully support a single income tax rate for everyone and Ukraine joining the EU once it meets all the conditions, both support re-establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and both fully oppose stricter state oversight of NGOs funded from abroad.

This summary is based on the parties’ documented positions on the test statements; the source of each position is on the party’s page. Updated 17/10/2026.

Differences

Where they clash most

Values and society

Same-sex couples should be able to register their partnership legally.

SaS Strongly in favour
Its 2027 programme proposes a legal civil partnership (životné partnerstvo) also for same-sex couples, with legal protection for the children raised in such families.
KDH Strongly against
Its manifesto protects marriage as the natural union of a man and a woman, and in 2023 its leader Milan Majerský said the party will never back registered partnerships.

Values and society

Ethical issues such as marriage or adoption should be decided only by each country, not by the EU.

SaS Strongly against
In 2025 the SaS caucus voted against the constitutional amendment reserving ethical and cultural matters to the state; its programme wants the primacy of EU law written into the constitution.
KDH Strongly in favour
In 2025 its caucus supplied the decisive votes for the constitutional amendment reserving cultural and ethical matters to Slovakia; its leader called it one of the party's greatest successes.

Cost of living and housing

The state should hold a majority stake in large energy companies.

SaS Strongly against
In the 2023 KohoVolit calculator it said no to returning strategic monopolies (power, gas, water) to the state; its programme says the state should not run the economy.
KDH In favour
In 2023 it answered that the state should seek, in the long run, to regain the power, gas and water monopolies, starting by exercising its shareholder rights more firmly.

Values and society

Abortion should be more restricted than it is now.

SaS Strongly against
In 2024 it fully opposed further restricting abortion; in 2023 it proposed that young people from 16 could have an abortion without parental consent.
KDH In favour
Its 2023 manifesto pledges every effort for full protection of life from conception, though it stresses helping mothers and in 2023 did not call for a near-total abortion ban.

Values and society

Possessing a small amount of cannabis for personal use should remain a criminal offence.

SaS Strongly against
Its 2027 programme wants no penalty for the smallest amount of cannabis and only an administrative offence for a small amount for personal use.
KDH In favour
In 2023 it said penalties for possessing marijuana should be reviewed, but that this does not automatically mean decriminalising it; it rejected legalising home cultivation.
