In brief

How do PS and Maďarská aliancia differ?

PS and the Hungarian Alliance part ways mainly on energy prices, Ukraine and Russia, and the EU. The Hungarian Alliance fully supports a legal cap on electricity and gas prices for all households, which PS fully opposes. PS fully supports resuming state military aid to Ukraine and fully opposes buying Russian gas and oil after 2027, and the Hungarian Alliance takes the opposite side on both. PS supports letting the EU decide foreign policy by majority vote and fully supports letting it freeze funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law; the Hungarian Alliance opposes both. They agree on Hungarian minority issues: both support Hungarian as an official language alongside Slovak in municipalities with a large Hungarian population and repealing the 2025 law that makes it a crime to question the Beneš decrees.

Differences

Where they clash most

Cost of living and housing

The state should cap electricity and gas prices by law for all households, not only for those on lower incomes.

PS Strongly against
Its 2026 housing plan proposes replacing energy price subsidies for everyone with a housing allowance only for those who really need it.
Maďarská aliancia Strongly in favour
Its 2023 manifesto calls for freezing household electricity prices at 2021 levels until the end of the term; in 2022 it demanded an immediate cap on gas and power prices.

Ukraine and Russia

Slovakia should resume sending state military aid to Ukraine.

PS Strongly in favour
In 2025 Šimečka criticised the government for only selling arms to Ukraine, asking why Slovakia cannot help it directly if it can sell it weapons.
Maďarská aliancia Against
Its 2024 European platform backs humanitarian aid to Ukraine and wants military aid left to each member state; its leaders have said peace would help more than weapons.

Ukraine and Russia

Slovakia should be able to keep buying Russian gas and oil after 2027.

PS Strongly against
Its MEP Michal Wiezik welcomed the EU ban on Russian gas imports in 2025; its TRESK plan aims to cut dependence on Russian energy supplies.
Maďarská aliancia In favour
Its 2024 European platform says breaking away from Russian oil and gas needs more time and asks the EU for more help to diversify supply.

European Union

The EU should be able to decide foreign policy by majority vote, without any single country having a veto.

PS In favour
Its manifesto supports moving to majority voting in selected areas of EU foreign and defence policy so the Union is not paralysed.
Maďarská aliancia Strongly against
Its 2024 European platform defends national vetoes on many issues and accepts shifting powers to Brussels only by consensus; its then leader said abolishing the veto hurts small states.

European Union

The EU should be able to freeze EU funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law.

PS Strongly in favour
In 2024 it answered that the EU should keep halting funds to states that breach the rule of law; in 2023 it welcomed that step against Hungary.
Maďarská aliancia Against
Its 2024 European platform accuses EU institutions of double standards and an almost political 'witch hunt' against some countries in the name of the rule of law.

Values and society

Same-sex couples should be able to register their partnership legally.

PS Strongly in favour
Its manifesto backs a civil partnership for all couples, including legal protection for their children, and seeking support to open marriage to all couples.
Maďarská aliancia Against
Its 2024 European platform defends the family based on marriage between a man and a woman and rejects 'LGBTQ propaganda'; it has not addressed registered partnerships.
