In brief

How do PS and KDH differ?

PS and KDH part ways mainly on values, climate and the EU. PS fully supports allowing same-sex couples to register their partnership, which KDH fully opposes, while KDH supports tighter abortion rules and keeping possession of small amounts of cannabis a crime, and PS fully opposes both. PS supports banning sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 and letting the EU decide foreign policy by majority vote; KDH fully opposes both. PS also fully supports letting the EU freeze funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law, which KDH opposes. They agree on much else: both support re-establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor and Ukraine joining the EU once it meets all the conditions, and both fully oppose stricter state oversight of NGOs funded from abroad and lifting EU sanctions on Russia.

Differences

Where they clash most

Values and society

Same-sex couples should be able to register their partnership legally.

PS Strongly in favour
Its manifesto backs a civil partnership for all couples, including legal protection for their children, and seeking support to open marriage to all couples.
KDH Strongly against
Its manifesto protects marriage as the natural union of a man and a woman, and in 2023 its leader Milan Majerský said the party will never back registered partnerships.

Economy and taxes

Everyone should pay the same rate of income tax, whatever they earn.

PS Against
Estimated position: it does not propose a flat tax; its TRESK plan would cut taxes on labour, including by raising the tax-free allowance.
KDH Strongly in favour
Its 2023 manifesto proposes a single flat income tax rate for everyone, keeping deductible allowances so that lower earners pay less.

European Union

The EU should be able to decide foreign policy by majority vote, without any single country having a veto.

PS In favour
Its manifesto supports moving to majority voting in selected areas of EU foreign and defence policy so the Union is not paralysed.
KDH Strongly against
Its 2024 European programme calls keeping the veto in its current form key to Slovakia's sovereignty, and that year it rejected ending unanimity in foreign policy.

European Union

The EU should be able to freeze EU funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law.

PS Strongly in favour
In 2024 it answered that the EU should keep halting funds to states that breach the rule of law; in 2023 it welcomed that step against Hungary.
KDH Against
Its 2024 European programme calls withholding EU funds over the rule of law harmful and ideologically driven, while accepting that the EU's financial interests must be protected.

Values and society

Abortion should be more restricted than it is now.

PS Strongly against
Its manifesto backs a more liberal abortion law: no waiting period or extra mandatory counselling, with medical abortion covered by public insurance.
KDH In favour
Its 2023 manifesto pledges every effort for full protection of life from conception, though it stresses helping mothers and in 2023 did not call for a near-total abortion ban.

Values and society

Ethical issues such as marriage or adoption should be decided only by each country, not by the EU.

PS Against
In 2025 PS did not vote for the constitutional amendment reserving cultural-ethical issues to the state; Šimečka said it harms people and is populism.
KDH Strongly in favour
In 2025 its caucus supplied the decisive votes for the constitutional amendment reserving cultural and ethical matters to Slovakia; its leader called it one of the party's greatest successes.
