In brief

How do SaS and Demokrati differ?

SaS and Demokrati take the same side on most statements in the test, the economy included. Both fully support a single income tax rate for everyone and cutting the standard VAT rate, and both fully oppose replacing the competing health insurers with a single public one. Both also fully support re-establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor and resuming state military aid to Ukraine, and fully oppose stricter state oversight of NGOs funded from abroad. They take opposite sides mainly on values, energy and EU funds. SaS supports allowing same-sex couples to register their partnership, and Demokrati oppose it. Demokrati support a state majority stake in large energy companies and letting the EU freeze funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law; SaS opposes both.

This summary is based on the parties’ documented positions on the test statements; the source of each position is on the party’s page. Updated 17/10/2026.

Differences

Where they clash most

Cost of living and housing

The state should hold a majority stake in large energy companies.

SaS Strongly against
In the 2023 KohoVolit calculator it said no to returning strategic monopolies (power, gas, water) to the state; its programme says the state should not run the economy.
Demokrati In favour
In 2026 it criticised the state for failing to win a majority stake in Slovenské elektrárne and called for buying at least 17% to strengthen state control of energy; in 2023 it had opposed returning them to the state.

European Union

The EU should be able to freeze EU funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law.

SaS Against
Its 2024 European election programme opposes the mechanism for withholding EU funds and would protect the rule of law mainly through the EPPO, OLAF and the EU Court of Justice.
Demokrati Strongly in favour
In 2024 it answered that the EU should keep halting funds to states that breach the rule of law, and in 2023 it said Orbán must not keep drawing EU money with impunity.

Values and society

Same-sex couples should be able to register their partnership legally.

SaS Strongly in favour
Its 2027 programme proposes a legal civil partnership (životné partnerstvo) also for same-sex couples, with legal protection for the children raised in such families.
Demokrati Against
In 2023 its then leader Heger said the time was not yet ripe for registered partnerships, and the party gave a neutral answer on them; nothing more recent has been found.
