In brief

How do KDH and Demokrati differ?

KDH and Demokrati part ways mainly on values and the EU. KDH supports tighter abortion rules, keeping possession of a small amount of cannabis a criminal offence and leaving ethical issues such as marriage and adoption to each country rather than the EU; Demokrati oppose all three. Demokrati fully support letting the EU freeze funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law, which KDH opposes. Demokrati also fully support resuming state military aid to Ukraine and cutting the standard VAT rate, while KDH takes a neutral position on both. They agree on much of the rest: both fully support a single income tax rate for everyone and Ukraine joining the EU once it meets all the conditions, and both fully oppose stricter state oversight of NGOs funded from abroad and buying Russian gas and oil after 2027.

This summary is based on the parties’ documented positions on the test statements; the source of each position is on the party’s page. Updated 17/10/2026.

Differences

Where they clash most

European Union

The EU should be able to freeze EU funds for countries that do not respect the rule of law.

KDH Against
Its 2024 European programme calls withholding EU funds over the rule of law harmful and ideologically driven, while accepting that the EU's financial interests must be protected.
Demokrati Strongly in favour
In 2024 it answered that the EU should keep halting funds to states that breach the rule of law, and in 2023 it said Orbán must not keep drawing EU money with impunity.

Values and society

Ethical issues such as marriage or adoption should be decided only by each country, not by the EU.

KDH Strongly in favour
In 2025 its caucus supplied the decisive votes for the constitutional amendment reserving cultural and ethical matters to Slovakia; its leader called it one of the party's greatest successes.
Demokrati Against
In 2025 it urged MPs not to back the constitutional amendment asserting sovereignty over national identity and cultural-ethical matters, saying it endangers EU membership.
